A thyroid storm is a serious condition that requires immediate attention. Thyroid disorders are becoming increasingly common in today's society.

Thyroid storms affect many people from all over the world. More than 5 million Americans today are said to be affected by hyperthyroidism. Although hyperthyroidism is relatively easy to treat a thyroid storm is a medical emergency that needs immediate medical attention.

A thyroid storm renders a person powerless to function normally and he needs to be taken to an emergency room for treatment. Knowing the signs of a storm is important for any one with hyperthyroidism as well as his family and friends.

Thyroid Storms and Hyperthyroidism Explained

Hyperthyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland overproduces its hormones and causes hyperactivity in the body organs. Profuse sweating, rapid heart beats, overheating, and weight loss are common symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

A thyroid storm is when the thyroid hormone level in a person who has hyperthyroidism becomes extremely high. All the common symptoms are more pronounced but the differentiating sign of a thyroid storm is the presence of a high temperature.

The body temperature can go as high as 105-106 degrees F. Confusion and a sense of extreme fatigue or exhaustion are two additional symptoms not in the norm for hyperthyroidism. A thyroid storm is life-threatening and anyone displaying symptoms of experiencing one needs attention in an emergency facility.

Thyroid storms are rare but there are several situations that are known to trigger them that should be made note of. The cessation of taking hyperthyroidism medications or taking too high a thyroid dose can initiate a thyroid storm.

Treatment with radioactive iodine or thyroid surgery are complicated by hyperthyroidism and can be catalysts. Heart attack or related emergencies can also bring on a thyroid storm.

How to Deal with a Thyroid Storm

Medical treatment for a thyroid storm can include intravenous fluids, electrolytes and corticosteroids as well as medications to control the fever and block further thyroid hormone production. Cooling blankets may be used to bring the body temperature down.

The possibility of heart failure may warrant additional emergency treatment. As soon as the emergency needs are met a thorough examination to identify the cause will be conducted. After thyroid storm treatment is begun, a stay in the intensive care unit can be expected.

Careful monitoring is required after discharge to fine tune a personalized thyroid treatment program.

The best prevention against a thyroid storm is early and pro-active handling of hyperthyroidism. Having family, friends and co-workers aware of the medical condition and educated about the emergency of a thyroid storm greatly increases the likelihood of a positive outcome if one occurs.
